Concept

Bhagavata Pura[l]a has influenced literature, traditions and cultures of different regions. Many regional traditions adopted Bhagavata as their basis while developing certain newer traditions. Some reflections of Bhagavata can be found in Mahanubhava Sa[l]pradaya (c. 1194-1282 CE) of Cakradhar Svami which flourished around 12th Century. There is no comprehensive work dealing with Bhagavata Traditions of Maharashtra in present day. It is the need to undertake such a project giving outline and overview of all Bhagavata traditions of Maharashtra with scholarly approach. It is also necessary to understand journey of Bhagavata cult specifically in Maharashtra. Main objective of the project undertaken by BRC is to publish an edited volume on ‘Bhagavata Traditions in Maharashtra. It will explore how Bhagavata traditions have intermingled with indigenous culture and how they have thrived with newer philosophical insights. Project aims to explore how Maharashtrian Bhagavata traditions travelled to other states and vice a versa. Transmission of VarakarT abha[l]gas in South India, Namdev’s devotional verses travelling to Punjab and Vallbha’s tradition in Maharashtra will be explored under this project. Syncretic philosophical schools which developed in Maharashtra will be analysed. Project will document and publish all known as well as unknown Bhagavata traditions of Maharashtra. Different art traditions, textual traditions, philosophical traditions, Saptaha traditions will be explored as a part of this project.
